We Stood In the Same Spot

“A WIP hiking book not about hikes”

Portraits connecting us at the same spots

We Stood in the Same Spot is an ongoing photography project that seeks to create a shared visual and narrative experience among hikers. Over the course of several years, I will repeatedly visit and document multiple trails within Rocky Mountain National Park, capturing not just the changing landscape but also the diverse individuals who traverse these paths. At specific locations, I will photograph hikers standing in the same spots as those before them, visually linking their journeys through time and season.

Beyond the portraits, this project is about human connection — both to the land and to each other. Have you ever come across a photo of a well-known landmark and instantly recognized it from your own travels? That moment of recognition sparks a wave of nostalgia, bringing back the memories and emotions tied to that place. It’s a reminder that countless others have stood in the same spot, experiencing their own versions of that moment. This project embraces that idea, creating a bridge between past and future visitors, connecting all who have paused in the same place to take it in.

My hope is to follow up with the people I meet, gathering their stories, reflections, and hiking tips. These personal narratives will provide insight into why people seek out these trails, what the park means to them, and how nature fosters a sense of belonging and renewal.

As the project unfolds across seasons and years, I will compile these portraits and stories into a book — one that is not simply about hikes, but about the hikers themselves. I hope it will serve as a testament to the shared experiences, fleeting encounters, and lasting impressions that nature facilitates.

Reinforcing the idea that even when we walk alone, we are part of a larger, interconnected journey.
